Just got an e-mail from Denver Poker Tour (Brian) illustrating an upcoming tourney.

Colorado State Poker Championships!

May 10th, 2008

EVENT #1
No Limit Texas Hold'em
$100.00 Charity Event

So you think you're good?
You think you're the best?
Do you want to prove it?

The first event of the Colorado State Poker Championships will be held on Saturday, May 10th in Denver, Colorado at Braun's Bar & Grill next to the Pepsi Center.

This will be a charity event benefiting "Progress For Prostate"
www.progress4prostate.org

Hundreds of players will be competing for the title of Colorado State Poker Champion in this No Limit Texas Hold'em event. (Event #1) This is a CHARITY event. The $100.00 Buy-In will get you into the tournament, free lunch, and a free drink. You will be able to hob-nob and play against local celebrities, sports athletes, and poker players. We will also have a Live and Silent auction for tons of stuff including autographed sports memorabilia, vacations, dinners, and other great items.

Random drawing will be held all day long for great prizes, and we will even have visits from local beverage companies.

WINNERS!

The Top 5 finishers will receive special recognition from local and national news outlets including;

Denver Post
Rocky Mountain News
Card Player Magazine
Denver Daily News
and more!

The overall winner will be crowned with the title of:

"Colorado State Poker Champion!"

www.ColoradoStatePokerChampionship.com

and their name will be listed in all future listings of the Colorado State Poker Championships, and posted on the website. The Colorado State Poker Championships is a series of twenty-one (21) events that will be held in Colorado this summer at various casinos in Blackhawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek. Please check the website for more details.

Here's a couple other links:

Is this legal? For some reason I thought that any kind of buy-in (even if it's for charity) was illegal outside of the casinos. Anyways I'm curious to see the write-up for this in the paper, like advertised.

*Edit: I just put this in the bar poker room because it came from Brian. It's probably better in the "Poker in the Mainstream" column.

It didn't say anything about paying out prizes therefore I don't think it is gambling if you don't stand to win anything.

I played the Brauns game a few times before DPT got in there and they gave out some crazy prizes (Ipods) during the raffle.

I guess that makes sense. Looking through the flyer, it looks like it's set-up to be $100 only gets you in the door. The poker game is just entertainment (free with no payout), and the only prizes are through a raffle available to everyone (not just players).

That's one way to do it I guess. I would suck if you ended up winning the tourney and got nothing in the raffle though, while watching the donk you busted at the first table win the flat-screen. Evil or Very Mad

Either case, I think I'd rather play the milehighpoker.com tourney that day.
