IPhone 3G
I was one of the lucky early birds for the IPhone 3G last Friday. Two of my kids had been anxiously awaiting the release of this phone so we arrived at the Mills mall at 4:30 AM to get in line. I thought, there must be no hype for this phone as there was no one in line and we were first to wait outside the doors closest to the AT&T store. At about 5:30 people started showing up and we had a group of about 10. One of the doors was cracked and we all jetted into the mall and lined up next to the AT&T store. A few minutes later mall security walks by and informs us that we are not allowed in the mall yet and that the doors would open at 7:00 AM. We all head back outside of the mall. By 6:30 the number of people had grown to about 20 and when the doors to the mall were opened everyone rushed the door and started running to the store. Luckily my son and daughter sprinted along with them and reserved our original place in line of first, second and third. By the time the store opened there was about 100 people in line and AT&T announced 50 phones available. When we left with two 8 GB black IPhones and one 16 GB white IPhone there was only 10 left and the line was going out of the mall. I think we were lucky as people the last person to get an IPhone at the Belmar store was in line at 3:30 AM.
There were problems accessing the ITunes store and AT&T decided to sell the phone plans and get you out of the store. The original plan was to have them set up the phone so that you would walk out of the store with a working IPhone, but that became an issue on the East Coast when they opened up. So we go home and my son couldn't access ITunes either. By 2:00 PM his phone was up and running and so was my daughters. I didn't even mess with my phone as I was too busy at work and was thinking of selling the phone with all the demand. Saturday I decided to keep the phone and activated it with little problem.
Below is my short review of the phone in the small amount of time I have had to play with it.
Pros:
-3G access definitely makes a difference and the speeds are very comparable to broadband. Not quite as fast as WiFi, but considerably close.
-Very stylish and good quality. You can tell from the feel of the phone that it is well built.
-Safari web browser is awesome. Full blown websites look great and the zoom feature is easy to use. Even this website looks great!
-This is my first IPod device and I enjoyed the interface for music and video. Sound quality was great with the standard IPod buds.
-The IPod buds have a small built in microphone that works great when you are listening to music and someone calls. The music fades out and click the phone to answer. After ending the call you return directly to where you were in your music playlist and song. Very nice seamless flow.
-Images look great and I really enjoy the scroll feature with this and other applications.
-Call sound quality is great. Once I had the volume adjusted, the calls sounded clear and my wife says there was no problem with quality of my calls on her side.
-There are just too many things available that I haven't had time to try. Plus there is just a ton of apps that can be loaded on the phone from the application store. Most cost money, but there are still a lot of free applications.
Cons:
-Battery life seems poor. Perhaps this is due to the 3G network needing more power. I was in BlackHawk yesterday and used the music player for about 5-6 hours, browsed the web about an hour and by 10:00 my battery was down to a 1/4 bar. At this time I shut the music player off so that I would still have phone usage.
-The camera is a 2 megapixel camera, but the shutter speed of taking pictures seems slow. Perhaps the speed can be adjusted, but I did not see a settings option for the camera. I was trying to take a picture of our dog and every picture was blurry due to him not being still. Moving the phone while taking pictures can also cause blurred images.
-No video. I'm surprised that the phone doesn't have video option. This is standard on most phones, but one of the most advanced phones doesn't have video.
-It's easy to hit links when browsing the web. Sometimes I would just want to scroll though a web page, but would end up being taken to another page by touching the link.
-GPS doesn't have announced turn by turn directions. This phone has a GPS chip which will show you where you currently are. It's not perfectly accurate and seems to vary by about a block or two. When getting directions, you receive a Google Maps direction sheet. Then you must manually hit the next button to show the next step in getting to your destination. I was hoping for standard announced turn by turn directions available in most standard GPS units.
Overall, the phone has been a joy to use. There is just so many things that this phone can do that I haven't had the time to try or knowledge to know is available. I would highly recommend the phone, even with the cons I list above. These are basically just little gripes that I have with the phone and small expectations that will probably be included into the next version. I also got to see Jamal's picture on Pokernews.com when he busted yesterday! I showed the image to a few dealers at The Lodge and they announced his placement over the intercom. lol

lol. There is an app that you can buy for the iphone for like $3 that looks like a beer. The image shows on the screen and then you tilt the phone like your drinking it and it empties the glass. So there you have it, you can have this and beer!dexman1349 wrote:idh78 wrote:I love this phone more than sex

Re: IPhone 3G
I really do love this phone! I'll have to disagree with Idh78 as my list of love for items would show sex right above IPhone.
We're at Home Depot looking for a new air conditioner and I'm checking out Craigslist and find a good deal on A/C. There is a phone number available and it's highlighted as IPhone realizes this is a callable number, pop up shows "Call or "Add to Contacts". Press call and viola get a hold of the guy and get a good air conditioner for $50. He gives me the address, which I use my virtual notes to jot down. Get in the car and use the GPS to locate directions to his place. We're coming back and realize that we need some parts to fit this into our window. It's now almost 9 and is Home Depot still open? Put in "Home Depot" into the GPS search area and little pins show me all the locations near us. Press the information button and wala, phone number for the store as well as general information.
It's going to be real tough to not have this phone. No longer do I use my home internet connection or log onto Yahoo. Pick up the phone see what's new, check the mail, look at what you all are posting, remote access my work computer. It shouldn't be long until my love for IPhone surpasses sex.

Re: IPhone 3G
If you have an iPhone, first gen or 3g, you need to get the new software update! Installed it last night. Battery life is greatly improved. I still have a full bar after using my phone all day. Apps install in a matter of seconds instead of minutes and app updates don't move your icon to the back of the page (used to have to move the icon back to it's previous spot). Texting is now so fast with no key lagging. This update (2.1) is truley awesome!
Re: IPhone 3G
agreed...what took you so long to get it?
