Should I have been able to put this guy on his eventual holding? Did I bet this poorly?

anytime I get a check-caller who then pushes when a third suited card hits the board I instantly think it's a flush. I have seen alot of players who don't give a shit about pot odds and just chase it down (especially when holding the nut flush draw). It would have been a tough laydown on the river, but with the check-call then push I instantly think he either has the flush or he is trying to represent one.

I was a bit worried about AA, given the preflop minraise, which if so, I could have let it go on the river thinking he hit his set on the turn, but I thought there was a possibility of KK or QQ, or yes, either the flush or the draw.

I suppose I can give him credit for disguising his drawing hand so well preflop.

My first thought was raise pre-flop, but if you really think he may have AA/KK then why not raise on the flop? If you push all in there(and he has AA) at best he is going to put you on a pair with flush draw. I think he definately calls that spot and is way behind to your set.

Knowing what he had he probably would have put you on AJ if you shoved. He can certainly call here, but might fold. Personally I think he calls under the thinking he has 14 outs......he is not happy to see only 8 on the turn and 7 on the river.

At the end of the day it is a tough hand because he sucks out under both scenarios.....

My only other comment would be the turn. By betting 25% of the pot you are making him pay more for his draw than its worth....slightly. If you are going to do this then you have got to be prepared to fold on the river. He can justify the 25% if he knows you will give him your stack should his hand hit on the river, but if you fold to his river bet you made him pay more than his draw was worth.

Hope that made sense.
