Trip Report Empty Trip Report

Post  Scrupboy Fri Jan 18, 2008 3:07 pm

Took a trip to Golden Gates on Saturday, Jan. 12 and thought I would jot a report. Perhaps we need a Trip Report section.

Originally planned on playing at The Gilpin, but upon arrival it didn't seem like too many people there. Made a phone call to the Gates to find out their structure for the noon tournament. When I found they had a similar structure, I walked down there and signed up (smoked a cigarette on the way since I can't smoke inside). Ran into a friend I used to deal to while with DPT, "What's up Ram?", and sat at a 2-5 table around 11:00AM with 100 white chips. Cashed out 130 white chips before the tourney, so far so good.

I always play the first hand no matter what since it is limit and lucky me 9-3o. Fop is 973, wow! Make a full house on the river and I'm table chip leader! About 30 minutes into the tournament I get 55 on the cutoff and raise. Get one caller in middle position. flop is 457 rainbow and it's checked to me. I bet out the pot of 500 and get check raised to 1000. I put him on open end draw or possibly the straight and make the call and hope the board pairs. Turn is the 6 and he bets 1500. Wow, I think possibly he has the straight if he flopped it, but why would he call my raise preflop with any of this crap. I put him on the 67 suited which would have given him the top pair and open end draw and now he has 2 pair for a good bet if I have a large pocket pair. After a brief deliberation, I make the call and pray for the board to pair (not the 6 or 7). My wish is granted with a 4 landing on the river and I fill up. He bets out 3000 almost instantly. Wow! Now I rethink everything and wonder could he of had 46 on the flop (which I hope and doubt) or pocket 6's or 7's. I'm now invested 2750 into the pot and it will cost another 3000 for a 11500 pot. Could I be in the unfortunate spot of set over set? Most likely. I ask a few questions hoping to get a tell, "So.... do you have pocket 6's or 7's?" I get no response and continue to deliberate.... finally make the call. He announces if you have pocket 7's you win, now I know he has pocket 6's and state if I had pocket 7's I wouldn't be calling. He shows the pocket 6's and I instantly muck my hand. He asks me if I had a straight which I say no, big pocket pair? I say no, but i had a pocket pair. This gives him the information he wants to know and I'm sure he's thinking what a donkey calling a board like that with an over pair. Just the way I want everyone to think about me. I bust out a few hands later with pocket 9's against pocket 10's.

Decide to play live action now since I only played the tournament for about 45 minutes. I proceed to win $120 in about 1 1/2 hours and think to myself that I should go play the 3:00 Gilpin tournament. Go out to have a smoke and call them. Find out the tournament is $150 freezeout with 12,000 chips. I only brought $180 with me and I used $80 for noon tournament and I'm up $150 in live action giving me $250. If I buy in for the $150 at Gilpin, I would only have $100 left for live action. Tell myself that if I get to $50 more in the next 30 minutes that I will go play the 3:00 at Gilpin. 30 minutes later, I lose $50 back and now sit at $200 total. Continue to play until around 6:00 when they announce that they will be having a 7:00 tournament for $60. Decide to buy in and cash out for a $130 profit and total bankroll of $260. $60 to tournament and I'm almost back to where I started.

Play in the 7:00 tournament and the structure is horrible. 2500 chips, 15 minute blinds. Despite the aggressive structure, I make it to the final table. Tournament pays top 4 and I go card dead and bust out in 9th while in ridiculous blind territory.

It's about 9:30 now and I get back into a live 2-5 game. Instantly lose $100 due to a couple of wild players raising every hand. Buy in for $80 more (save my last $20 just in case) and start to pick up some cards. Hit a few hands and I'm back up to $170, just $10 down for the session. My wife calls and yells at me about how I've been up here all day and that it's time to come home. I don't want to argue so I tell her I'm on my way. Cash out and find I'm up a whole $10 for the day, plus about 12 redbulls. Stop by the deli and pick up a few comp sandwiches (tip the cooks 10% of my profits) and head to the Gilpin to get my vehicle and tip another $1.

Get home at 11:30 PM with my $0.66/hour profit to find everyone asleep and in bed. Why am I told to come home I think to myself. Watch some TV, have a beer and fall asleep on the couch.

The End

Thanks and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it! This is the first time I've ever seriously considered a blog and after reading through some of Mondogarage's blog it's starting to sound more appealing. Don't know what I need to get started, but I'm going to find out this weekend and hopefully get something going soon.

Here's a story I wrote on AllVegaPoker.com last year about my trip to Vegas. It's long, but entertaining to us $5 limit people.

That sucks man! I have noticed that I favor hands like 6-8, 5-6, 8-10 and my favorite 3-5 suited over premium hands in limit. The preflop percentages are not in favor of these hands, but when they hit while others are sitting with large over cards you cash and they don't like to let go.

I take an Omaha game never developed.

Nope.. Probly after I left, but I refused to go the atm again. I was literally telling myself not to sit 2-5 before I sat, saying it outloud. That game sucks SO bad.

No shit. According to my spreadsheet, I've had nine losing sessions out of my last 11 (though before that, I had my largest two up session). So gross. I won't play 2-5 anymore unless I only have a few minutes to kill before a tourney. There's nothing at all wrong with limit poker, but when 2-5 is essentially the only game in town, no one will ever fold postflop. Ever.

Worded pefectly. If there as a bigger game that people with more money could sit in things would change pretty drastically. I prefer limit poker. I am a limit poker specialist. But when the guy to my left would be making $50 bets in Vegas for every $5 he puts in the pot here, it kinda makes the games truly like bingo. Whoever has the best hand at showdown will win with little credit given to your own play in this game and it is sad.

Well said. Actually, when I said limit, I meant to say "low limit", but that's a given.

When I'm in Vegas, I tend play play 4-8 limit (because that's how micro I rolls, lol), and the game usually plays very different to 2-5 up the hill, and I'm sure the same goes for 3-6. Only up the hill do you see the gambooooolers, playing so low, and for them, there's no enjoyment unless it's action every hand.

I'm comfortable playing any of those guys in tournaments, where our buyin is worth the same in tournament life. But when their rack of whites doesn't mean anything to them at all, it's just not even poker.

Post  Scrupboy Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:51 pm

Well I just spent about 15 minutes writing the detail of my trip report to the Golden Gates on Saturday and when I posted the entire report dissapeared. Mad

I don't have time to rewrite the entire trip so I will just summerize and try to add detail later.

Made the noon tournament on Saturday for $80 buyin and 69 players with $8000 chips each. Get down to 5 way action to which the chip leader offers a modified deal where he will take 2nd place and the 4 of us can chop 1, 3, 4 and 5 place. This gives us all better then 3rd place money and the deal is made. 1st receiveds $1110 and the rest of us get $820 each. Not a bad deal especially when the chip leader had about 50% of the total chips. I'll take that deal any day of the week with blinds at 6,000/12,000 and about 80,000 chips.

Overall I end up with a $570 win for the day as I lost about $50 in live action and $70 in the stinkin slot machines. My tournament cash ratio is now at 50% though as I have cashed in 3 of 6 live tournaments this year. Not a bad start to the year!

Very nice Son.. And taht sucks about it not posting. That can be aggravating Mad I have had that happen to me on forums too many times over the years and now if I am doing a long detailed post have formed the habit of copying my work periodically or even into a word processing app as I simply don't trust the internet. Nice run though man! Way to go!
