What do you guys suggest for a structure for a tourney which you want to last 3-4 hours.
This is a two table tourney Im thinking 10k in chips and 30 min blinds should do the trick. am I right?

3-4 hours? um no...unless everyone plays like a maniac or you start blinds at 100/200.

we have played a tourney like this several times (the $100 one in Highlands Ranch) and even when we only had 19 people one time it still took 8 hours...granted we did take a 45 minute dinner break...

I would say 5k is the highest I would go for starting chips....and maybe drop it down to 20 minute rounds.

I know alot of the SNG's online use this structure:

1500 in chips
10/20 starting blinds
10 minute blind levels.

To adjust this to live play, simply up the blinds to 25/50 with 20 minute levels. If you want it to last a little longer, perhaps adjust the starting stack to 2000 or 2500 or lengthen the levels to 30 minutes.

I would suggest something like this:

2K starting stacks

20 minute blinds

25/25
25/50
50/100
100/200
200/400
here is where you can make a change depending on how fast your tourney is going. If it is moving along quickly and you want to slow it down then go 300/600 then 400/800. If it is going to slow go directly to 400/800, skipping 300/600.
500/1000
1000/2000
2000/4000 (if you reach 2000/4000 you have some tightwads playing

is this for a bar game or money game? If a bar game I think you can probably get away with more starting chips...people play so fast...

even the MHP monthly game has been getting done in about 5 hours with 3K starting and 40 minute levels.

antes, they add up.

I think this sounds about right. We used to run a 2 table at the northshore that went 3-4 hours, 20 minute blinds and 1500 in chips. Of course the first hour the blinds didn't go up so I increased the stacks to 2k and considering it's real money I didn't think many more chips were needed. When you add some flexibility when you hit 300/600-400/800 that allows you to make a change on the fly depending on how things are working out. If it is going to fast you can always add levels like 300/600, 400/800, 500/1000, 600/1200, 700/1400 etc. Obviously if there are no time constraints you want to make a longer structure but the flexible blinds are just an idea.

And starting with a stack around 5k would be okay if you make the later, larger blinds harsher.

this is for a final tourney for a bar game..we want to start at noon and have it done at 4-5ish. I think it would be funny to do 20K stacks, and start at 5-10. Thanks for the input guys

Some friends put on a free neighborhood poker tourney every month. Winner gets a pair of movie tickets.

You get a full rack of chips (T1000), and the blinds start at 2-4 with 15-minute rounds. You can pre-flop raise to 100 at that blind level with high pocket pairs, and still get 6-7 callers. Crazy game. Usually lasts about 5 hours.

5k stack
don't post a structure anywhere
start the blinds slow:

25/25
25/50
50/200
75/150
150/300
200/400

once you hit 200/400 use the flexible structure. you can hop to 300/600, 400/800, or even 500/1000 from here depending on how fast you want it to go. Don't announce you are changing how fast the blinds run just say "the blinds are now going up to...." and be done with it.

Just a crappy idea.
