Question about being contagious.
So I am sick. I don't think I quite have strep throat but it is really close. I did not go to work today and assume I am not going tomorrow.
My question is am I going to make my baby sick? I know this sounds like a stupid thing to say but here is the catch. On Tuesday we brought him to the doctor and found that he has an ear infection so he is on amoxacillin. Will this keep him from catching what I have considering he is already on antibiotics?
Should I take his leftover keflex that he was given when his chest wound was healing?
As long as the sickness keeps me from going to work then I am going to milk it but if I am risking making my baby sick then I will go to the doc. Do you think the amoxacillin is going to keep him healthy?
Just a few questions. Thank you.

#1 - you are probably contagious now or at least were previously.
#2 - Don't EVER take someone else's antibiotics. In the first place, the baby's dosage won't do shit assuming you actually have a bacterial infection except strengthen the bacteria causing the infection. A baby dose of Keflex for ~ strep would be the equivalent of pissing on a forest fire after drinking a gallon of gasoline.
#3 - it's more likely that you have either allergies (big deal this time of year - everyone thinks they have a cold) or a viral infection. The best thing that you can do is push fluids and wash your hands before handling the baby. Obviously don't spit on him, sneeze on him, etc.
#4 - a lot of infant ear infections are secondary to viral or bacterial upper airway infections. You may have contracted this from the little man in which case he's not likely to get it back from you.
Please feel scolded on the antibiotics thing. Don't ever consider doing this again.

Re: Question about being contagious.
I'm not a doctor, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but...
I'm pretty certain that antibiotics will *not* prevent an infection, and should not be taken as preventive care, because the more you take antibiotics, the more your body builds up immunities to those, making them less effective later in life. They will help kill a virus, but I do not believe they will prevent one.
I don't know anything about Keflex, but if it was prescribed to *him*, then no, you should definitely not take it at all. Besides, you wouldn't even begin to know an effective dosage for an adult, would you?

Re: Question about being contagious.
FTR Emily suggested I take his ceflex and I told her I wasn't going to. I just figured I would ask. I will now scold her.
(yes she used to be an EMT)

I thought antibotics were usless to viruses?
remember when cousin Belky had a plant that's leaves were a cure for the common cold. and Larry tried to grow a ton of them, but it caused peoples skin to turn green or something? classic...

Antibiotics only treat bacteria. Most "colds" are viral.
I know a lot of stuff. You guys should listen to me.

Re: Question about being contagious.
Your child should be fine. Make sure you wash your hands before and after handling him to help cut down on exposure. Obviously don't cough on him or blow your nose just before picking him up. If you are contageous you would have been before you started showing symtoms, too.
Remember that if he never gets sick, he'll never build up his immune system on his own. Keep an eye on him and if you ever have a question, call your doctor.
As to the question on the amox: it depends on what you have as to whether it will be effective or not. If what you have is bacterial it may help, but if it's viral then the amox won't really do anything. Either way I would NOT change your son's medications in any way shape or form.
I also am not one to really promote self-medication with someone else's meds (especially a child's meds). If it's uncomfortable, then run to King Soopers and get some Robitussen to help with any cough or sore throat.

"but I had two Kings!!!"
I love when people get all pissy during a misdeal...it's like free tilt
but seriously if you are going to get that upset over a hand you wouldn't even have been dealt, then don't look at your cards...just toss them in and move on....besides it's not like your hand was a 100% winner or something...

I think the "imagination" side of this site is a place we no longer want to visit.

You make it sound like something would have to be wrong for me to do this.

Re: Question about being contagious.
It's so funny to start reading these posts from the bottom up! Uhhhh, whiskey in a bottle, smoke a joint and meds. Has this forum changed from poker to "What to do after work"? ...oh I see what the subject is now. Kids will get sick and yes the immune system will need to build so no need to live life in a bubble. <----- has 4 kids at home, 2 are sick.idh78 wrote:PoWdA wrote:
