Not poker-related
Hell, it's not even me, it's my only good half, my darling wife.
But yesterday, she won the College of Applied Human Sciences Tenure-Track Teaching Excellence Award for 2008. That's a lot bigger than it probably sounds, because it is unheard of for anyone who wins that award (only one per year in her college, and only 6 per year total at CSU) to not get tenure.
That means that unless she gets caught with a dead hooker and a bag of meth, pulls a Ted Haggard, or bursts into a sports collectors deal in a Vegas hotel with OJ and some guns, she's pretty much assured of tenure when she goes up in two years. Hell, she can probably even get away with a Ted Haggard.

Wow! That sounds like a great award. Like Danny, I don't have a clue as to what this award entails, but I'm now curious enough to look this information up. I'll have to wait until I use a desktop system as there is no cut and paste on my phone. Regardless, give her my congrats!

Well, the actual award itself is just a plaque, and something like a $200 bonus (though the presentation event this spring will be rather cool). It's the implications of the award that make it so special. The struggle to get tenure is every bit as brutal (and possibly more difficult these days) as the struggle to make partner in a big law firm. And those who don't survive tend to get pushed out.
The award is pretty much an indication that she's a shoo-in to get tenure when she goes up for it in two years. So that's actually pretty huge, and a much bigger deal than the award itself.
But the award itself is so cool, because so few get it, only six junior professors a year at the entire University.

Good to see that someone in the family is doing something with their life (jk)!
Give her our congrats!
